movie name change, glenburn-Asylum

Our original idea was to name our trailer after the place in which it being filmed, hence "Glenburn" as we were and did do most of our filming within Glenburn sports college in Skemsdale. We decided that we wanted this to be the name as it was short and catchy and left people wondering, "what's Glenburn?" although after completing the majority of our filming it was brought to the attention of the schools headteacher ho was informed that this film trailer would more than likely be uploaded to you tube, as a result he headteacher decided that the name "Glenburn" will not be allowed to used for our title. As a result this caused us some minor problems as we had to think of a completely new name for our trailer that was still catchy and fitted with the scary/ mystery of our trailer. After much thought we as a group decided to call our trailer the new name of "Asylum." We liked this because it could have many meanings such as asylum in which mentally unstable people may go, or asylum in the sense of somewhere to shelter and stay at, this leaves our movie title open and  leaves the audience wanting to know more.

Glenburn approval letter from site manager

As we were filming on the grounds of an operational school, we decided it would be appropriate to get the permission of the school to film there, thus we asked the site manager (Ian Westall) who has the authority to grant us access in and around the building.

story behind our production name

Empty Web Productions

Coming up with our production name wasn't easy,
we decided to create a spider diagram of things we found scary and things we thought would be a fitting name for a horror production company. Empty web came about when one of us mentioned about how scary spiders are the way they are so fast and unpredictable. It was later suggested that the scariest thing about spiders is when one minute you see the spider and the next it has dissappeared. We came to the conclusion that an empty web is very creepy as where is the spider! We had a variety of name ideas such as venomous sting films and followThrough productions but we felt Empty Web to be the most appropriate and fitting.

prop list

In our film “Glenburn” we will require different props this is to make the film come to life and be more thrilling and also it will make the film look more realistic.

The main prop we will need is a plain white mask (as shown in the image below), this is the most important prop because it hides the identity of the villain away and leaves that mystery of who is behind the mask, all three of the villains will be wearing the same type of mask with different emotions on the mask.

The next prop we require is simple every villain needs a weapon and in this case we have decided that the perfect weapon for our villain is a machete, this is to give our film the more sadistic feel to it e.g. Jason and more gore to the film, we will be borrowing this prop from one of our friends, and it will be used safely and for filming purposes only.

The next prop is another weapon for the second villain and this is a simpler but effective weapon this is a baseball bat, now this is easier to get hold of, we already have a wooden baseball bat, this is a better weapon because it is easier to manoeuvre and use.

The third and final prop is another weapon for the third villain this is another simple weapon but smaller and easier to hide, it is a knife now this is a good effective weapon because the villain can move quietly in the darkness and not be heard and then pounce on their prey and strike quickly with the knife.

character profiles

These four friends have grown up with each other all live close to each other came up through primary school together came through high school together they do everything  together.

Issac-(Played by Joe Westall)
This character is part of the main group the film will be about, now Issac is the more realistic one in the group he likes to think things through first before jumping into anything so in the group before doing anything stupid he thinks of the consequences of what might happen, Issac is a family person has a big family and enjoys spending time with them all he has; Mum, Dad, two Sisters, Brother and 13 cousins and 14 Aunties and Uncles so he has a big family, he is also a big animal lover with having such a big family the majority of them have pets such as dogs and cats, Issac himself has 3 dogs which he adores.  A little bit about Issac he puts every one first instead of himself he is a very kind and caring person he will think of others before himself this is what probably helped him in getting his girlfriend which has been with now for about 3 years he treats every one with respect he never thinks low of others, he is a very sociable person likes to be involved with his mates as much as possible and do loads together go out cause mischief etc.

Teddy-(Played by Liam Rabbette)
Now Teddy is more of the chilled laid back one in the group he just goes with the flow, Teddy doesn't really have a big family he is an only child so he likes to hang out with his mates because he hates being alone his dad left him was he was 5 so his mum has raised him up on his own with out re marrying so he loves going out with his mates, Teddy is a member of a band called flight of the eagle he is the lead guitarist he is really into his music it is his passion, Teddy is very streetwise he knows all the tricks of the trade.  He will do whatever his mates do he is not worried about consequences or events that might happen, his main trait within the group is that he is that he has no fear he will do anything and that is seen highly from his friends.

Peter-(Played by Tom Parr)
Peter is the cool character of the group he is the person that in school every one knows who he is and wants to be him, Peter has a small family mum and dad and little sister he is really close to his sister he looks out for her all the time if their is any trouble at school or if she is being bullied he is the first to be their and sort it out, he doesn't like resorting to violence he always sees different way to sort out situations without resorting to violence, he is a person which is always up for a laugh and looks out for his friends however there is another side to Peter were sometimes he likes to be on his own a be a lone wolf and none of his friends question this. Peter is a very logical person he looks at things fro every point before making a decision and can spot a stupid idea from one of his makes and can understand quickly is an idea will work or not.

Luke-(Played by Max Schofield)
Luke is kind of the idiot of the group it starts from the fact that Luke has an average family mum and dad, little sister and a older brother, now he looks up to his older brother as a role model his older brother is mates with every one gets all the girls, an Luke wants to be like him so he tries copy his personality to his failure, Luke is very cocky and sometimes this gets into trouble because he doesn't know when to keep his mouth shout and his friends have pulled him out of some in-tension situations before, he is a loud person and doesn't really care what people think of him, he has a major flaw that he never thinks things through and has no common sense he just jumps into things before thinking and then realizes he has got himself into a mess and its up to his mates to get him out of it, he has abusive banter which can sometimes get out of control and cause arguments between the group but he looks out for his mates, however their is another side to Luke the real side when things start to get tension he acts like he is not scared and he is big and tough but in matter of fact he is petrified of most things but he doesn't let other people see but his friends know this side of him.

synergy with marketing

Synergy is important for different reasons and they all contribute to the success of the film, when a film is first being released the production company will also bring out other various things to drip feed information to the potential customer. This could be a variety of things such as a film poster and a trailer because this gives information to the customer not too much to ruin the film but enough to show the idea of what the film will be about. When they introduce a film poster the majority of the time the images on the poster will have been shown in the trailer of the film.  The posters will be put out in different public areas sometimes posters are on the electric bus shelters, they are also included in adverts like 'orange mobile' adverts to promote upcoming films. Whilst promoting the film it is normally mentioned within the advert, posters might be put on big billboards depending on the film, this is done so that every knows about the film and is constantly reminded of it to soon be released.  Synergy is used by all marketing teams for films because they want as many people to know about their film as possible so they make the most profit.

Here is an example of a film poster on the side of a bus, this is clever marketing because buses will go all around a city showing and advertising the film to everyone in the given area.

                               Dear EA,

For my year 13 media coursework I am currently creating a horror trailer, I am writing to you regarding the theme song of 'twinkle, twinkle little star' used within you successful game Dead Space 1. I feel this song would fit in well with my media trailer as it has that eerie, scary feel to it. I would very wish to use this song and would appreciate it greatly if I could. I will not be making any profit from this trailer but would be extremely grateful for your contribution, and would gladly accept any terms and conditions that you may have.

kind regards,

Empty Web Productions.

History of film trailers

Film trailers have always been the main selling point of any new film that is to be released. Film trailers have undergone incredible changes over the years to get the audience always gripped and wanting to actually see the film. Trailers have also adapted in the technologies they use from simply the use of colour to now where the majority of the trailer is in CGI (computer generated imagery). There are two main types of film trailer, the promotional trailer which is often short and is simply used to sell the film or promote it, there is also a theatrical trailer which is usually longer and contains a lot more information and we can pick much more up from it.

One of the earliest trailers that was released was the 1937 Walt Disney film Snow White. Throughout this trailer there is a heavy use of large text put on screen which conforms to the stereotypical 'bigging up' of the film "nothing ever like it'. Also throughout the entirety of the trailer there is no use of any clips or segments of the film, but instead pictures and  clips of Walt Disney himself describing the film and why he is so happy with it. This style would never be used in the modern day film industry as company's now thrive of hinting story lines and showing clips of the film.

Another key trailer comes from 1977 which Star Wars: A new hope. This trailer was so important as it was one of the first trailers of its time that featured its special effects that were considered way ahead of its time in a major role as the vast majority of clips of the film were highlighting its technological capabilities. however by now its use of a voice over was now seen as common and it also still used large text to advertise the film further.

From here on out the main development in trailers since has been the use of music that is now seen as a necessity in film trailers as well as further use of CGI. Also in modern trailers there use of music that is fitting to the trailer and music that helps to create an atmosphere within the trailer, as well as small snippets of scenes to leave us wanting more, often the best scenes are shown in the trailer to make the audience want more.

Film trailer analysis

Lord of the rings film trailer analysis

film trailer- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIgkpEgCV-I

The lord of the rings is a film based on the classic tale written by J.R.R Tolkein directed by Peter Jackson in 2001. The lord of the rings is a film in which an unlikely hobbit is entrusted with the task of destroying an evil ring of power, with the help of of many strong characters, whilst facing incredible hardships along his journey.

After watching the lord of the rings film trailer that lasts 2 minutes and 50 seconds and reading up 'save the cat' screen writing book by Blake Snyder I have found that this film falls into the institutionalized category. This is the category in which a group of people band together to with a common cause or goal in which they all desire to achieve. The reason i came to this conclusion is because as you can see throughout the trailer it has a lot of mention of how the protagonist (frodo Baggins) will need the help from the fellowship of followers to protect him on his perilous journey. Therefore the group of people are coming together to achieve a shared goal.

Codes and conventions

Within the trailer you will notice a lot of graphic captions such as "He was chosen" these are used to grip the audience into almost believing that the story is real and drip feeding them information on what the film is going to be about.

Often used in trailers is non-digetic  sound/music this is to give the film its actual feel for example creepy music could be played to create a creepy feel for a scary film or fast paced music for a comedy.

Also, we got some narrative enigma which was a voice over explaining briefly what the film will be about and does a good job of setting the film up for the viewers.

With the suspenseful music and dark feel the use of scene fades used in this trailer was used very well and gave it an almost exciting feel to it, as the trailer progressed the fades became a lot more rapid and even became almost jump cut like.

wolverine trailer analysis

The Wolverine is the latest installment from the superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Wolverine. It is intended to be the sixth installment in the X-Men film series and follows the events of X-Men: The Last Stand. It also follows the earlier prequel 'X-men origins wolverine.' It will be released into the cinema on the 24th of July 2013 in 3D and 2D. It has been directed by James Mangold, writer and directore of 'walk the line,' and various other books and films. Wolverine was produced by Marvel companies and 20th century fox and is said to do very well in the film market. This film had a staggering budget of $100 million + which could suggest that a lot of serious investment and funding has gone into the production of the film!On October 29, 2012, director James Mangold and actor Hugh Jackman hosted a live chat from the set of the film. The chat took place on the official website and the official YouTube account of the film.

Here is the poster produced to tease the fans about the upcoming film and how even from the poster we can tell that the film is going to be cool, Hugh Jackman (wolverine) is looking strong and angry and as if he is ready for battle, this makes people want to see more. The international trailer for the wolverine had around 110 scenes within it, this will give the crowd or fans small snippets of what to expect and can get people really excited for the film, as it usually leaves them wanting to see more, although with so many scenes in the trailer, they run the risk of revealing too much about the film and giving away the plot.

Most of the trailer consists of very quick jump cut kind of scenes that leave us thinking, wow did i just see that? This is clever as it will make alot of people want to watch the trailer again and again to make sure they saw it correctly once again making the film more relavent in peoples minds.
